Rethinking Retrofit at RIBA's HQ
Duncan Baker-Brown has advised RIBA on the retrofit of its London Headquarters for the last two years, as the Sustainability Champion. 66 Portland Place was designed by George & Miriam Wornum, and both the external facade and most of the interior finishes are unusual, fragile and not going anywhere. So the question was "how to retrofit this valuable shell of a building when you can't touch the interior or exterior?"
Duncan, along with Guy Willis-Robb of Harley Haddow, explains to Eleanor Young in the RIBA Journal, how the natural instrinct of "fabric first" had to be swapped for a low carbon "tech first" approach for this particular situation.
